Canberra and Meher Baba
Meher Baba never physically visited Canberra but there is a brief connection that I have always treasured since it occurred ‘from the sky’ several days after my 3rd birthday in Canberra. It is referenced in John Grant’s book Practical Spirituality. (online p 4099)

Meher Baba came to Australia for the first time, arriving in Sydney on 9 August 1956. On 11 August in the late afternoon he flew to Melbourne with a quite large group, one of whom was May Lundquist, then living in Canberra. It so happened there was extensive flooding in Canberra, and indeed right across the Murray Darling basin in NSW, Vic and SA. Years later my parents described these floods and their impact. For Murray River towns, they are still the worst floods ever.

One of the mandali (close Indian lifelong disciple) sitting with Baba saw the flooding below and pointed it out to Baba, who stood up and walked up the aisle to where May was sitting and in John’s written description ‘lovingly stroked her hair’ while they both gazed over the landscape. My memory from John telling the story was that Baba also gestured to the effect that … its OK, my Nazar (gaze, protection) is on it… My belief is Baba blessed Canberra at that moment, through May Lundquist as His personal connection.
